Breathe starring Claire Foy and Andrew Garfield filmed in Hatfield

Starring Golden Globe winner Claire Foy, of The Crown and Wolf Hall fame, and Academy Award nominee Andrew Garfield, Breathe (12A) is based on the true story of producer Jonathan Cavendish’s own parents.

After contracting polio at the age of 28, Robin Cavendish (Garfield) is confined to a bed and given only months to live.

With help from his family and inventor Teddy Hall, pioneering polio survivor Cavendish devotes the rest of his life to helping fellow patients and the disabled.

Cinema-goers watching Andy Serkis’ directorial debut can see the estate of Hertfordshire stately home Hatfield House on screen in the movie.

Claire Foy is no stranger to Hatfield House. She filmed on location at the historic mansion for the first series of The Crown, in which she plays Queen Elizabeth II opposite Matt Smith as Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Biopic Breathe also stars BAFTA-winner Tom Hollander (The Night Manager), Golden Globe nominee Hugh Bonneville (Paddington) and Episodes star Stephen Mangan, who went to school in Potters Bar.

It is an inspirational and highly emotional celebration of bravery and human possibility, a love story about living every breath as though it’s your last.

Adventurous and charismatic, Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) has his whole life ahead of him when he is paralysed by polio whilst in Africa in 1958.

Against all advice, Robin’s wife Diana (Claire Foy) brings him home from hospital where her devotion and witty determination transcends his disability.

Together they refuse to be imprisoned by his suffering, dazzling others with their humour, courage and lust for life.

However, against the odds, Robin’s illness gave him new purpose.

And with the help of his family and inventor Teddy Hall (Hugh Bonneville), Robin fights tirelessly for the rights of disabled people – and his pioneering work had a huge impact on mobility and access for the severely disabled.

Breathe is just the latest production shot at Hatfield House to hit cinema screens.

Summer blockbusters Transformers: The Last Knight and Wonder Woman also filmed scenes at Hatfield House.

Viceroy’s House, also starring Hugh Bonneville opposite The X Files’ Gillian Anderson, used the estate, as did Tom Hardy’s TV series Taboo.

The first Paddington movie was also partly filmed in the grounds of Elizabeth I’s childhood home.
