The role of the fighter aircraft in war and conflict will be explored at next month’s Duxford Air Show: Meet the Fighters.
The Duxford Air Show: Meet the Fighters takes place at IWM Duxford on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11.
The show will demonstrate the speed and agility of fighter aircraft, past and present.
In the 80th anniversary year of the formation of RAF Fighter Command, the spotlight falls on Duxford’s central role as an active fighter station during World War Two – possibly the most important air war ever fought.
During this time, Duxford’s RAF fighter pilots contributed to the defence of Great Britain in the Battle of Britain and later, under the control of the United States Army Air Forces, Duxford took the fight to the enemy in the skies over Germany.
The flying display explores different types of flying and fighting, developing tactics, the role of the fighter pilot and how war is fought when the enemy doesn’t possess fighter aircraft.
Highlights of the flying display include:
• The Red Arrows (Sunday only).
• Six Supermarine Spitfires showing the evolution of fighter tactics.
• A 1930s combination of biplane fighters including two Hawker Nimrods, a Hawker Fury, Hawker Demon and Gloster Gladiator.
• A group of Naval fighters including a Consolidated PBY Catalina, Goodyear Corsair and Supermarine Seafire.
• Soviet fighter aircraft represented by a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 and a Yakovlev Yak-3.
All flying is subject to weather, serviceability and operational commitments.
There will be activities across the Cambridgeshire museum, including RAF living history groups and live entertainment from The Bluebird Belles and the RAF Wyton Band.
The Duxford Air Show: Meet the Fighters is advanced tickets only.
