The ladies took centre stage at Potters Bar Hockey Club - beating out the first aid box on a tough weekend in the East League.

They had the only victory of the day for the club as they defeated Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead 6-1 in the early fixture at Dame Alice Owens School.

Four goals scored by Sam Lemmon scored two-thirds of the Bar goals with one each from Chris Field and Vicky Watts-Evans.

That leaves them third in Division Seven South West.

Elsewhere, things weren't as good.

The men's first team were away to high flying Cambridge South in Division One South and fell to a 5-0 defeat, leaving them still stuck to the bottom of the table and searching for their first win.

The seconds were involved in a 10-goal thriller in Division Three South West, but lost 6-4 at home to Bedford.

Flynn and Toby Jennings, Warren Edmondson and George Wickham were their scorers.

The thirds also scored four in the same division but they did avoid defeat away to Hertford - drawing 4-4.

Three goals came from Aryan Walia with the other scored by Nani Reddy.

That leaves the threes unbeaten with two wins and three draws so far this season, sitting them third in the table.

The seconds are down in eighth.

The fourths had a bye week and are part of a full league break on Saturday.

Welwyn Garden City ladies head into that slip week on the back of a 3-0 loss away to Bedford.

The hosts now sit second with just one defeat from their five games so far. WGC are down in eighth with a win and two draws.

Both teams came out strong and the first 10 mins were pretty evenly matched.

Welwyn's defence absorbed a lot of pressure at times but they were only beaten once in the first half, a stray ball making its way across the line.

But they successfully defended several short corners and some slick passing up the right-hand side in particular, where Nina Taylor was stepping in to cover from her usual forward position, led to superb aggression from the youngsters, Connie Dykes and Pippa Webster, up front.

It brought some excellent chances but unfortunately for WGC nothing came to fruition.

They were still pleased with their performance and at 1-0 down, they felt they had it all to play for.

Bedford came out strong though in the second period, Heather Veal making some vital tackles to clear the ball.

They did concede two in the opening 10 minutes of the half and keeper Nat Granger made some crucial saves.

And they also showed a superb amount of resilience for the rest of the game, which bodes well for the rest of the season.

There were long periods of attacking play, making use of the entire pitch with some lovely passing, and player of the match Ruby Sanderson held the team together superbly.

The men's first team were also in Bedford, drawing 0-0 in Division Two South West.

The only success in the men's section was a 5-0 win for the seconds against Stevenage, although the thirds did draw at home to Harpenden.

Over in the ladies section though, the thirds and fourths both won.

The threes beat Shefford & Sandy 4-0 away while the fours defeated Chiltern 4-1 at home.
