Welwyn Garden City kept held of their Southern League Division One Central play-off spot - even if few at Herns Lane will remember the clash with Enfield.
The 0-0 draw was poor fayre for the 131 crowd with both defences on top throughout, and it left chances at a premium.
There was early optimism among home fans at seeing probably the strongest WGC line-up fielded this campaign.
The trio of skipper Brad Wadkins, Jack Green and Charlie McDonald all returned to the starting line-up, with a fourth of the previously injured absentees, Ryan Sellers, on the bench.
That optimism soon faded though after a bright start by the home side.
New striker Reece Cameron, making his home debut along with keeper Joe Welch, had the game’s first opportunity, when he neatly controlled a pass and spun on it to hit a low shot, but it was straight at Enfield keeper Lermar Joseph-Johnson.
Four minutes later, good work by Bailey Stevenson saw him make a cross-field run, before setting up attacking full-back Layne Eadie.
Again though, the final shot was straight at Joseph-Johnson.
Sadly, although there were only 14 minutes gone at that stage, it was to prove one of the best openings WGC enjoyed all afternoon.
Enfield, making their first trip to this part of Hertfordshire following a lateral switch from the Isthmian League in the summer, rarely threatened.
They did, however, go very close with a powerful header from central defender Matt Hurley from a corner, that cleared Welch’s crossbar by inches.
There were just 10 minutes left in the half when WGC had their next effort, a low shot on the near post from raiding full-back Zuriel Otseh-Taiwoo that forced Joseph-Johnson to his best save of the afternoon, tipping it round post and bar.
The second-half was a very forgettable affair.
Manager Marc Weatherstone rang the changes, firstly introducing Sellers for Benjy Crilley and then Jack Vasey replaced Wadkins, who had looked somewhat out of touch after his injury lay-off.
The Citizens did have the ball in the net, when Eadie rose well to a right-wing cross to head in Otseh-Taiwoo’s cross, but the assistant’s flag was already raised for offside.
Eadie had to leave the field injured, victim of a crunching tackle that saw the Enfield offender lucky to escape with just a booking and Harvey Steel replaced him.
With five minutes left, Henry Jones became WGC’s fourth substitute, but the game was long past saving and certainly won’t live long in the memory of anyone watching.
Clearly, a couple of dropped points in WGC’s quest for the top of the table, although they still remain in the play-off positions.
WGC: Welch, Otseh-Taiwo, Eadie (Steel 78), Green, Read, Crilley (Sellers 58), McDonald (Jones H 85), Taaffe, Wadkins (Vasey 75), Stevenson, Cameron.
