A bonus point was the only reward for some fine late attacking play and spirit as Welwyn fell to their first defeat of the new rugby union season.
Playing away at Hackney Marshes, they lost 40-28 to Old Streetonians in Counties One Herts Middlesex, failing to back up a success at home to Fullerians on day one.
A tough first half proved crucial and saw them turn around 12-0 down.
They had been defending for most of it and the pressure resulted in a number of penalties conceded, while there was also a yellow card for a high tackle,
A quickly-taken penalty brought the first try in the corner after 15 minutes while the second arrived 10 minutes later, another overlap again putting them in at the corner although this time the conversion was good.
The start of the second half brought two more home tries, these ones also converted, and both were down to errors from the visitors, a mistake at a line-out followed by an interception.
But at 26-0 down, this was the point Welwyn started to show more promise and a great attacking move was deemed to be held up over the line.
The five-metre scrum saw Welwyn break but the whistle had sounded to prevent the try, even if the decision was a scrum back to the away side.
A quick-tap penalty did see them finally break through, Anton Denton touching down and Kai Wells adding the extras.
Back came Old Street though with two more converted tries, leaving Welwyn with pride to play for.
And they can take that as job most definitely well done, showing great pride in adversity to score three times in the final 10 minutes, all converted by Wells.
The second score was down to some great support play, outstanding Fijian winger Salanabuka the one to cross the line, and more of the same created another break for try number three, Denton getting his second.
Welwyn continued to push and they got the try bonus point with a score finished off in style by Josh Milton.
Welwyn take on Cheshunt at home on Saturday, kick-off at Hobbs Way at 3pm.
Datchworth were involved in an equally high-scoring game as they went down 44-35 at Ruislip.
They have yet to record their first victory of the season and sit 11th with a home derby against Hitchin up next.
