A very depleted fleet turned up to begin the winter pursuit series at Welwyn Garden City Sailing Club.
Many members had woken to a lightning storm that did not auger well for being out on the water with tall metal masts.
And those that did turn up had to wait for at least 20 minutes after the last lightning strike before preparing their boats.
The heavy rain showers and chilly conditions meant that sailors were overdressed as the sun came out as racing started.
Sheila Stowe returned to sailing after a long layoff and was an early starter, staying out in front to win the first race.
With the wind strengthening she decided that was enough for her so left the second race to the three men.
Alan Campbell quickly established a lead in race two to get a win on the board while Mike Caddy, disqualified in the first race when he missed a mark, redeemed himself with a second place.
That left Charles Adams with another third place for his efforts.
