Welwyn United Ladies were forced to settle for a point as they let a 2-0 lead slip away at home to Bedford Albion.

Playing at King George’s for the first time in Beds & Herts Division Three this season, the hosts started well and took an early lead, Emma Bowers rifling a free-kick on the edge of the box low into the bottom corner.

All the chances were Welwyn's at this point as they looked to add to their tally.

Ruby Hazell, Abigail Rowark and Tracey Pilon all had opportunities but instead the second came from another set-piece.

Laura Agnew sent this free-kick into the box and after Albion failed to clear, Ellie Whitfield sent it arrowing into the net for 2-0.

Bedford did manage to pull one back before half-time, capitalising on a counter attack, but Welwyn started the second period keen to restore their two-goal lead.

This time their attacks floundered against their revitalised opposition and Albion had numerous chances but failed to convert, Welwyn grateful to goalkeeper Sophie Huckle for producing some key saves as time ticked down.

Still, it was the visitors who had the last say as they smashed home an equaliser late in the second half to dampen the United's first home game.

Welwyn, who are second, go to Flitwick Eagles on Sunday.
