The sun shone brightly for the second men’s major of the year at Brookmans Park Golf Club.

There were 81 players teeing off in the 36-hole President’s Trophy, second in importance only to the Club Championships.

Played off handicap, there was a wide range of golfers with handicaps from scratch to 24 and with the course in excellent condition there were some great scores recorded.

The 18 holes in the morning resulted in Colin Wotherspoon leading the field with a nett 67, four under par.

This was closely followed by Luke Watling and Brad Poole, both two shots back on 69.

It remained a closely fought contest in the afternoon too.

Pat Smith posted a nett 67 to go with his 72 from the morning, but the combined 139 total was only good enough for third place overall.

That was one shot behind Jack Oliver who added a 68 to his morning 70 for 138.

The overall winner though was one shot further ahead on 137.

That was Poole who fired only one shot more than his morning round.

His afternoon 18 holes were up and down was a real rollercoaster but he managed to recover from some poor scoring on a couple of holes to keep his nerve for a well deserved victory.

The trophy was presented by club president Martin Connolly dressed in period golfing attire, to applause from all the competitors who stayed for the presentation ceremony.

Brad Poole took the opportunity to thank Martin and club Golf Manager Ian Jelley for the excellent organisation on the day and also the club’s greenstaff for the superb condition of the course, before inviting everyone to join him for a drink to celebrate his victory.
