Organisers hailed an “amazing day” after 450 competitors enjoyed perfect running conditions in the annual Welwyn 10k race, held on Sunday in Panshanger Park.

The event, organised by Garden City Runners, is the main fundraiser for the club, with all proceeds going to Welwyn Festival charities.

This was the second year the race was held in the park, following its relocation from Welwyn village last year.

The race was started by Annie Brewster, the High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, and the participants were sent on their way by enthusiastic supporters to run through the picturesque parkland with stunning views.

The women's race saw Freya Weddell, also of St Albans Striders, secure victory with a time of 39:24. Inga Cobb of Harpenden Arrows (39:54) took second, and Mirka Brcica (46:59) completed the top three.

Garden City Runners celebrated double victory in the team categories. The men's team of Joe Ansbro, Peter Harvey (39:17), and Jamie Rose (39:35) secured first place, while the women's team of Hannah Frank (48:02), Lucy Iles (49:22), and Helen Stafford (49:44) also topped the podium. Trophies were presented by Janice O’Donnell of HRJ Foreman Laws.

All 10k finishers received a unique wooden dragonfly medal, a testament to the race's commitment to sustainability and the local environment.

A separate 2k race for children saw 50 young runners take part and first home was Michael Pearce in 7:39, and the first girl was Lily Janmohamed in 9:14.

“We're thrilled with the success of this year's event,” said race director, Barbara Kubis-Labiak, of Garden City Runners.

“I can definitely say that this year felt like we were properly settled with our Welwyn 10k at Panshanger Park - last year was brilliant but this year was even better, thanks to all the volunteers and the race team. The weather, the incredible spirit of the participants, and the support from the community were all outstanding.

“We're particularly grateful to our sponsors, Tarmac, Croudace Homes, and HRJ Foreman Laws, for their generous support. A special thank you must also go to our hardworking volunteers who pulled out all the stops to ensure the race ran smoothly.

“It was an amazing day, and I am so proud to be the race director working with so many amazing, helpful and dedicated friends - GCR is truly an exceptional running club."
