Successful repairs to the Gosling Velodrome has brought cycling competitions back to Stanborough - and Welwyn Wheelers have grasped the bull fully by the horns.

The surface of the track was so bad it meant the club, home to Olympian Laura Kenny in her junior days, had to cancel their hugely popular Track League for more than a year.

But after extensive work, the league is back and if that wasn't enough, the club have also hosted a round of the National Youth Omnium.

That sees some of the best young riders in the country take part across separate disciplines and was where Kenny, then Laura Trott, first made her name.

The Welwyn leg was the fourth of the series with the series final coming in Manchester next month.

For the home club, Esmee Bone took the win in each discipline to lift the U14 girls' crown and it was a similar story in the U14 open group, Asher Gray also dominating in the time-trial, scratch race, elimination race and Keirin on his way to the overall win.

Oliver Stewart placed third in the U12 boys & girls group as did Iris Gray in the U16 girls.

The U16 open group was arguably the most competitive with nobody winning more than one discipline.

Welwyn's Elijah Storti was one of them, claiming the fastest time in the time-trial, but a disappointing result in the scratch race dropped him to eighth overall, 32 points behind eventual winner Edwin Boyle of Preston Park Youth.

The Friday Track League meanwhile has seen seven fixtures so far, with disciplines ranging from the standard scratch and points race to the likes of hare & hounds and two-lap dash.

Benjie Williams and James Fisher both won scratch races, with Williams also victorious in the Youth 2 two-lap dash ans win out races and Fisher taking the Senior B elimination race.

Storti was also the winner of one discipline.
