Shire Park Bowls Club (Tewin) played host to another representative game - with this one seeing Hertfordshire get off to a great start in a national trophy.

This was the first game for the county's ladies in the round-robin section of the Johns Trophy and they picked up a 122-93 success over Bedfordshire.

That was the main action at the club for the week with not many of their own games.

There was a 35-34 defeat in the John Brown Trophy against Parkside, despite a 17-15 success for Eileen Williams, David Williams and skip Gus Edwards away from home.

In the Welwyn Hatfield League, however, Shire Park Yellows took all six points away to Hertford Harlequins with a 39-22 win.

Both rinks won big, Elaine Wulcko, Barry Wright and skip Bill Draycott just the better of them with a 19-9 victory.

Shire Park Greens also won, beating Bengeo 39-31 thanks to the 29-11 rink win of Ray Adams, Alan Watts and skip Paul Ashwell.

In his Champion of Champions match, Mike Howe lost to Barry Cooper from North Mymms 21-9 and there was a defeat too in the one friendly match, 123-69 against Rosedale although Alan Watts, Elaine Wulcko and skip Byron Sinfield won their rink 17-16.

Datchworth’s men travelled to Northaw and Cuffley in the County Team Ten and returned with a six points to two win after wins in three of the four disciplines.

Mike Mahoney won a back and forth singles match 22-19 while Jackson, Henley and Jim Smith picked up a 15-10 victory in the triples.

Ian Green, Keith Smith, Arnold and Peter Hills won 31-16 in the fours.

There was also a victory in Division Three of the East Herts League as the Golds won 36-28 at home against Sawbridgeworth Blue.

Both rinks won with the 17-11 success of Green, Julian Hales and Terry Metcalf the top one.

A mixed friendly at Standon & Puckeridge ended in a 47-44 loss despite two rink wins, the best of them from Andy Pattle, Ann Edwards and John Oliver.
