Welwyn's men suffered a tough 3-1 loss at Bedford last weekend and will hope to bounce back when they host Broxbourne in their last game before the Christmas break.
The game began well for the home team as, after a number of solid saves, goalie Dan Klinger was finally beaten.
Firm defending by Rob Sansom and James Lutrario saw more Bedford attacks thwarted before Mark Skilbeck combined with Nate Last, who saw a shot come back off the post.
Bedford doubled their lead after a good passage of play on 20 minutes, but Welwyn battled on and driving runs from James Fowler and wing backs O’Connell and Mullens created real threat.
Unfortunately, Welwyn were caught on the counter just before the break and, after Klinger had made some outstanding saves, Bedford made it 3-0.
The visitors started the second half well, with Dave Allmand-Smith creating a number of chances only to see Bedford's goalie make key saves.
Ever-threatening winger Callum Burr added to the pressure as Welwyn went on the charge, slotting the ball to Allmand-Smith who flicked it delicately to O’Connell to fire home.
Midfielder Bryn Evans made a number a key challenges and created many chances, but a number of decisions went against Welwyn and Mullens saw an effort from an aerial pass ruled out.
After a few key chances went by the wayside, Allmand-Smith went on a charge but, after taking the ball past three opponents and entering the D, was foiled by the final whistle.
Potters Bar continued their recent improvement with a 5-1 win over Hertford, as Mark Turpin netted twice and Jonathan Elms, Hugh Kenney-Herbert and Zahid Khan - with his first goal for the club - also found the target.
The seconds won 3-0 against Bishop's Stortford fourths as Ben Robert, Ben Cade and Hugo Pomian struck, while the thirds beat Hertford 4-0 as Warren Edmondson claimed another hat-trick and Christos Votsis joined him on the scoresheet to lift them up to second.
The fourths were edged out 3-2 by Bishop's Stortford sixths, with Andy Latham bagging a brace.
