Stalwart Alison Waters is looking to create more memories as she gets set to represent the nation as part of the English side aiming to defend their European Team Championship title for a seventh successive year.
The 33-year-old from WGC, who trains at Hatfield’s Herts Sports Village, is a regular in the tournament and cannot wait to play in it again when it starts next Wednesday (April 26) in Helsinki, Finland.
The world numnber nine told the WHT: “The Europeans is something I look forward to playing every year.
“To represent England is an honour and something I’m very proud off, we have a great team and it’s always a really fun week.
“I’ve played the Europeans for about 10 years or more, barring a couple I missed for injury.”
“I remember my first cap when I played in Amsterdam all those years ago.
“That was a special moment. I have lots of great memories from the Europeans and some of most favourite times.”
England have won the title 39 times out of 40 since the founding event in 1978.
The only year England did not lift the title was in 2010 when the Netherlands were triumphant.
Having been so dominant, England again will be favourites.
“We are always expected to win,” said Waters.
“We haven’t lost many over the years, we know we are there to do the job, but at the same time we always make sure it’s relaxed and an enjoyable week.”
The compeititon is one of the rare times squash players come together for a team event, another will be next year’s Commonwealth Games to be held on Australia’s Gold Coast in April.
Waters, who won silver and bronze medals at the 2014 Games, is hoping to be involved again and these tournaments are a perfect way to get ready for it.
“It will be nice to be back into a team situation ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games.
“We don’t get to be all together as a team that often so it’s [the European Team Championship] good preparation.
“We have a lot of squads in Manchester over the summer practicing doubles ahead of the World doubles competition in August and this is ideal preparation for the games next year.”
