The A1(M) has reopened following a multi-vehicle crash near Stevenage.

The serious crash and a fire closed the A1(M) southbound between Stevenage and Welwyn at around midday on Saturday, March 26.

A picture from a passenger in the queue showed smoke billowing over the motorway at the scene.

The southbound carriageway closed between junction 7 (A602, Stevenage) and junction 6 (Welwyn) after the collision, with queues northbound.

The northbound carriageway cleared at around 3pm, but the southbound carriageway remained closed into the evening.

The road fully reopened overnight - at around 2.30am on Sunday, March 27.

The crash took place in the Knebworth area.

An earlier National Highways statement read: "The A1(M) south is closed due to a collision and fuel spillage which has caused significant damage to the carriageway surface."
