A Hatfield mum has told the Welwyn Hatfield Times of her “frightening” experience after a car crashed into her property during a police chase.
At 12.42am on Sunday, December 4, police attempted to stop a vehicle as it left Comet Way in Hatfield after officers noticed it was driving “erratically” and over the speed limit.
Police followed the silver Mercedes, which then collided with a house, and another house’s front garden in Buttercup Close.
Louise Haden, whose front garden was destroyed in the collision, said: “I was fast asleep and I woke to my whole house shaking.
“My bed and all the pictures hanging up were shaking.
“At first I thought a plane had crashed somewhere.
“My son screamed and told me to come and look out of his window at the front of the house so I did, and I could see a car planted into my front garden.”
Louise then ran downstairs and saw the damage to the front of her property.
She said: “I’m gutted. I’m really into my gardening, it took me ages to do up and it’s not cheap either.
“My neighbours have duct tape holding their wall together now after the crash.
“The car could have landed in my front room if it hadn’t stopped after the impact of firstly hitting my neighbours’ wall, and then my garden. It is really lucky that it didn’t.
“My youngest son is really shaken by it. His bedroom is at the front of the house so it would have shaken the most.
“The car would have driven around the play area. Imagine if it was during the day and children were playing in that park.
“It has left me shaken. It’s really upsetting, especially so close to Christmas.”
A 2010 Toyota Auris was also damaged in the crash.
Two Hatfield men aged 20 and 18 were arrested and have been bailed to return to Hatfield Police Station on December 18.
The 20-year-old man was arrested for failing to stop and for possession of cannabis and the 18-year-old was arrested for driving a vehicle without consent and failing to stop, dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance.
Members of the public said they were woken up by the chase and reported hearing sirens and a police helicopter.
No one was injured during the incident.
