The Knebworth Estate has submitted a planning application to build five new homes on land in the village.
The plans, put forward by heir to the estate Edward Lytton Cobbold, would see the single storey, terraced properties built at Old School House in Park Lane, Old Knebworth.
Parking, associated landscaping, boundary fencing and cycle storage are also included in the proposal.
According to the application, the homes will be rentals and estate employees will be given priority as possible tenants.
"The Knebworth Estate finds it difficult to employ locally from the village of Old Knebworth as the only reasonable rental accommodation available for singles is the Old Knebworth Almshouses," the plans read.
"To address this need, the Knebworth Estate is looking to make use of the disused Old School House playground plot to recreate a building in the same configuration as its existing Almshouses, but with external finishing to match the Old School House which the plot neighbours.
"The Estate will offer the terrace for rental, with priority for its own local employees.
"The proposals are intended to enhance the existing site, improve its functionality to allow it to achieve its optimal use as a residential plot of land without any detrimental impact on the conservation setting."
