Work has begun on 14 new social rent apartments in Welwyn Garden City.

Construction has started on the modern one-bedroom apartments at Ludwick Green as part of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council’s Affordable Housing Programme, and its commitment to building new social and affordable homes.

The site was originally made up of eight homes, but these had to be decommissioned because of structural issues.

The new scheme, which will involve the demolition of the current building, will include two wheel chair user apartments, a parking space for each apartment and EV charging points available.

The project is expected to be completed in Spring 2026, with the properties owned by the WHBC and let as social housing.

WHBC's executive member for housing, Gemma Moore, was among the councillor's to visit the site last month, describing it as an "important development".

"The delivery of social housing is a priority for the council, so it was great to visit Ludwick Green and find out more about this important development," she said.

"The new apartments will provide modern, good quality affordable homes for local residents and are an example of our commitment to providing high-quality homes for all."
