A prolific Hatfield councillor and former mayor James Bond has sadly passed away, aged 83.
Tributes have been paid to the former Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council member, who died in hospital on Saturday, October 26 following a long illness.
James served as a Hertfordshire County councillor for three years as a member of the Environment Cabinet Panel and represented the residents of the Hatfield north division.
Until last year, James was a councillor on Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council and enjoyed a role as Hatfield Town Councillor for the Central and Newgate Street village Wards.
He was also well-known for his position as Hatfield Town Mayor between 2022 and 2023.
Cllr Tony Kingsbury, who served with James during his roles within HCC and at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, said: “James was enthusiastic to serve as a new councillor, elected as a Town, Borough, and county councillor all on the same day in 2021—a testament to his commitment to his community.
"In my role as group leader at Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, it was a privilege for me to work alongside James, particularly as he represented a ward not often expected to be won by our group.
"Despite significant health challenges, James showed resilience and made every effort to attend crucial meetings even when it was a struggle with his health.
"Although he lost his borough seat this year, his passion for Hatfield was clear in his hard work on town council projects. His recent passing is profoundly sad for all of us who respected and admired his dedication in adversity.”
Chairman of HCC, Cllr Terry Douris said: “We mourn the passing of our colleague. James played an important role in representing his constituents in Hatfield North both at Hertfordshire County Council and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council.
"Although James did not enjoy the best of health he made every effort to attend Council meetings where his presence and contribution was valued. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends and our thoughts are with them at this sad time.”
The Leader of Hatfield Town Council, Cllr Larry Crofton, added: "It is with deep sadness that we learned of Cllr Bond’s passing. He was a devoted councillor and a steadfast advocate for our community, serving our town with unwavering commitment and making a meaningful difference in the lives of many residents.
"Throughout his time as a Councillor, James was a pillar of strength—a voice that could not be ignored. His tenacity and dedication were evident in every project he took on.
"He will be greatly missed, not only as a Councillor but also by his friends and the many residents he supported. Cllr Bond’s legacy will endure in the lives he touched and the community he helped shape. Today, as we remember him, I’m sure I speak for all of us in saying that we hold his family in our thoughts during this difficult time."
