The site of a former care home in Hatfield could become 72 new homes after a planning application was submitted.

Plans, submitted by Even Hatfield Ltd, would see St Christopher's Care Home in Drakes Way turned into a major housing development.

The care home has stood empty since last year, when operator HC-ONE were forced to close the site after declining resident and workforce numbers led to "financial constraints".

The proposed development would consist of 16 one-bedroom apartments, 12 two-bedroom apartments, 28 two-bedroom houses, 12 three-bedroom houses, and four four-bedroom houses.

The two and three-bedroom homes will be two storey buildings, while the four-bedroom homes and apartments will be three storeys.

"Units are set across both housing and apartments with houses laid out in both semi-detached and terraced formats," the application reads.

"The apartment block was divided into two separate blocks creating more double aspect units and also greater permeability through this part of the site.

"This proposal is for high quality residential dwellings in a highly sustainable location.

"The outlook and visual amenity afforded from within buildings and private and communal garden areas should be satisfactory, taking account of the relationship with neighbouring buildings and the wider street scene, including the design of parking, boundary treatments and landscaping."
