An event to mark Purple Tuesday is set to take place at Welwyn Garden City's Howard Centre next week.

Tuesday, November 12, marks Purple Tuesday, with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council organising an event to promote accessibility and inclusivity for disabled people and their families in shops, businesses and public spaces.

Purple Tuesday is a global initiative which every November, asks participating organisations to make a public commitment to improve accessibility and practices to help ensure that disabled customers have a more positive experience.

This year’s event will take place outside the Card Factory shop in the Howard Centre, from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a range of activities. Free goodies bags will be handed out containing a reusable water bottle, Allium Purple Sensation bulbs (thanks to Joseph Rochford Gardens Ltd), chocolate and a large neon squeezy ball.

At 11.30am the Purple All Stars will be performing followed by Pushing Boundary’s Crew at 1pm.

Organisations including AccessAble, Oaklands College, Space, Jubilee House and others will be participating.

Cllr James Broach, executive member resources, said: “I am delighted that we are once again hosting a Purple Tuesday community event to highlight the challenges and opportunities faced by disabled people and their families.

"This annual event is a great way to remind all of us of the importance of considering accessibility and inclusivity when thinking about the customer experience.

"As a member of the Disability Confident employer scheme, accessibility is a priority for the council and we are committed to continue to support disabled people and their families across our community and beyond."
