A fire at a commercial building in Welwyn Garden City on Wednesday night (October 9) started accidentally, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed.

Firefighters were called at 9.07pm to reports of a fire in a commercial premises in Mundells.

Four fire engines were sent to the scene, where four hoses were used to tackle the fire, which was extinguished by 11.15pm.

Assistant chief fire officer, Mark Barber, confirmed an investigation concluded that the fire started accidentally, and urged people to check their fire alarms.

"Thanks to the swift actions of a passerby who heard the building’s fire alarm and called 999 our crews were able to tackle and contain this fire quickly preventing a more serious incident," he said.

"Please check your fire alarms, they are one of the most effective ways to save lives and prevent serious damage to property."
