Hello dear readers,

My name is Mia, and as a nine-day-old puppy I was rescued by a kind RSPCA inspector following a welfare investigation, along with my mother.

Initially I lived with a foster family but as I grew from puppyhood, the resident dog and I did not get along, so I went to RSPCA kennels in the Midlands. Later as an adult I was transferred to Southridge RSPCA.

On October 7th I celebrated my fifth birthday, having lived almost my whole life in kennels.

In human terms that is 35 years! This makes me so sad and despondent.

(Image: RSPCA Southridge) Southridge has tried so hard to find me a home (I even have my own Instagram page) but sadly for me - although I have fans and followers far and wide and have even received birthday presents from Canada - no one has yet shown an interest in adopting me.

I have featured twice before in the Welwyn Hatfield Times, so I have toes and paws crossed that it will be third time lucky, with one of you special readers making my wish for a home come true?

I am a fully supported dog, meaning that the Friends of Southridge will cover all my care needs for the rest of my life, so you don't need to worry about how much the vet costs or my 'school fees', you can just focus on me.

I am a truly wonderful, healthy and (as my photos attest) beautiful dog, but being a Dutch Shepherd, I am not your typical pet.

I have an alert, keen intelligence and a sharp mind - members of my breed were originally herding dogs.

Now we excel in police, military service and search and rescue. I was bred to work and like to keep busy both physically and mentally. You get the picture, I don't want to be the pet left at home after a quick morning walk, I want to be your partner in life.

I have a longing to learn, and once I have built up a bond with you, will reward you with the wonders of my abilities and a fierce loyalty and affection.

I have made huge strides as I have matured, and staff and volunteers who know me well have witnessed my growing confidence, trust and calmer demeanour.

My daily walks at Southridge often includes a run around the big compound, followed by a stint in 'the cabin', with nice sofas, where I love practicing mind-exercises, sits, stays, downs, waits and seeking hidden treats and chasing a ball.

I enjoy strokes, belly rubs and cuddles with my human friends, often giving their arm a quick nudge with my paw if they stop. I know I would be great at agility too.

Although my confidence around other dogs has improved greatly, I can get a little anxious when I see certain dogs, so just in case while in public areas I am used to wearing a muzzle. This will need to be part of my routine in my new home.

I do have a few requirements - an adult only home (no children visiting) and a secure garden large enough for me to play and explore, as well as a quiet area to myself where I can switch off and relax.

I could live with a male dog, but no other animals. My special person should be experienced with dogs, ideally have an interest in dog behaviour and training and have the time and dedication to devote to my wellbeing and learning.

Your reward will be an amazing, smart, loyal and fantastic furry friend.

Please, please if you think you can offer me the right home, don't ignore my plea. I am so special, have been waiting all my life for the normality of a home most humans and dogs take for granted.

I want so much for my next birthday to be in my own home with my special human friend!
