Hatfield's Market Place could be set for new lease of life after plans were submitted to rejuvenate the site.

The proposals, but forward by architects BDP on behalf of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, would see the town centre location given a new layout, paving, play equipment, lighting and street furniture.

Barriers in front of shops would be removed and a redundant market trading hut would also be demolished as part of the plans.

According to the design and planning statement, it is hoped that the improvements will make Market Place at "focal point for the community" in Hatfield.

"This square currently lacks a purpose within the town but has the potential to become a focal point for community gatherings and commercial activities," the application reads.

"The proposed development represents an exciting opportunity to reinvigorate Hatfield Market Place, providing updated and modern play and leisure infrastructure, alongside significant new planting and biodiverse spaces.

"The development will support the core retail zone in Hatfield, enhance the experience of visiting Hatfield as a destination, and contribute to the regeneration of the town centre."

The new play area will also pay homage to Hatfield's aviation history, with the application continuing: "Hatfield was home to the de Havilland Aircraft Company, a British aviation manufacturer known for its innovation.

"The factory located in Hatfield manufactured a number of innovative aircraft models from the 1930s to the 1960s.

"Building on this rich industrial heritage, the design proposal for Market Place includes themed plane markings of the most iconic de Havilland planes, as well as aviation-themed climbing structures in the play area."

Safety is also a key part of the plans, adding: "Lighting will provide a safe and attractive environment for visitors to Market Place.

"As part of the lighting proposal, we plan to retain the existing light columns at the centre of the square and add additional multiple head spots to them.

"To increase visibility and safety for pedestrians, it is proposed to add a set of lighting columns with single mounted luminaires around the perimeter of the mounded activity area.

"Uplighting key trees with feature lighting will provide a soft glow and create an inviting atmosphere, highlighting the existing trees. This will also serve as an attractive feature, enhancing the area’s appeal and providing additional light for pedestrians."
