A planning application has been submitted to install a drive-through at a vacant unit at The Galleria in Hatfield.

The plans, submitted by LS Galleria Ltd, would see a drive-through service window and a new traffic lane added to Unit 70 at the shopping outlet in Comet Way.

The removal of ramps and railings, and the enlargement of an external service door are also part of the proposal.

The unit has stood vacant since 2020, when Chiquto shut down after owners The Restaurant Group decided to close 51 of its 60 UK stores.

"This application relates to changes to Unit 70, located within the Galleria North," the application reads.

"This is a restaurant unit, which is currently vacant, but which previously accommodated a branch of the Mexican restaurant chain Chiquito.

"It is proposed to retain the use of the unit as a restaurant for dining in, but also to provide a drive-through option, similar to those which already operate within the site, for the adjacent McDonald’s and Burger King restaurants."

The Welwyn Hatfield Times reached out to The Galleria about a potential new tenant moving into the space, but a spokesperson confirmed the plans were "just an application at this stage", and not changes for a specific restaurant.

"The proposed drive-through kiosk on the site of the building would allow for a more efficient use of the space within Unit 70, which would in turn create a need for additional employment," the application continues.

"It is estimated that Unit 70 as currently configured generates around 18 jobs, and the proposed changes would lead to the provision of an additional five to seven jobs.

"This is a factor which weighs in favour of granting planning permission."
