A planning appeal has been launched to save a Harry Potter-themed tree house in Welwyn, after an application to keep the structure was rejected.

The tree house was built at 2 Wych, in Elm Lane, but a part-retrospective application to keep the building and complete construction of a shielding fence was refused by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council at the end of July.

"The proposal would result in undue harm by way of loss of privacy and overbearing impact to the living conditions of neighbouring occupiers," the decision read.

The applicant, Gemma Raval, has now launched an appeal against the decision, with the original application stating that the "Harry Potter-themed castle is used for the applicants' daughter and friends", and that fencing and new tress would be put in place to block the view of the tree house.

"The space has been used to create a Harry Potter-themed castle for the applicants' daughter and friends. It is considered to be of excellent quality, imagination and design," the application reads.

"The tree house is located more than 30m south of the main dwelling, and more than 45m away from number four to the east. It is heavily screened by trees.

"Whilst it is considered that the tree house is of excellent design, aesthetics and quality, it is also recognised that such views are ultimately subjective.

"Accordingly, it is proposed to install a two-metre close boarded fence and five evergreen trees, to provide additional screening along the boundary.

"It is considered that the additional screening provided by the two-metre fence and these new trees, together with the already substantial tree cover that exists, removes any reasonable grounds for refusal on the basis of any visual or amenity impact.

"The tree house, fencing and trees as proposed create a fun and well-designed addition to an already beautiful home and gardens.

"Given the extensive grounds and foliage already in situ, together with the fencing and additional screening that is proposed, the applicant respectfully requests to grant its permission to retain and complete the works as described herein."
