A speed limit reduction has been proposed for roads in Welwyn and Woolmer Green, as part of efforts to make them safer for pedestrians.

As part of Hertfordshire County Council’s Safer Routes to School project, a new 30mph speed limit could be introduced along the B197 Great North Road, from Oaklands Primary School to just past the North Star pub, and also on London Road in Woolmer Green.

Other measures are also being proposed, such as new and upgraded crossing points, and footpaths being widened.

A consultation period for the plans went live today (September 9), and will remain open until October 7.

Two public drop-in events are also set to be held on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, September 18, from 5pm to 7pm, at Oaklands Primary School
  • Friday, September 20, from 3pm to 7pm, at Woolmer Green Village Hall

"We’ve listened to feedback from the community and schools in Oaklands and Woolmer Green, who clearly want us to make it safer for children to be able to walk, wheel and cycle locally, particularly to and from school," said Cllr Phil Bibby, executive member for highways and transport at Hertfordshire County Council.

"We’re keen to hear what they think about these detailed proposals.

"Our aim is to offer all residents a cleaner, greener, healthier Hertfordshire. By increasing access to walking and cycling initiatives, we'll improve health and air quality, as well as helping to reduce traffic congestion."

Tony Kingsbury, Hertfordshire County Councillor for Welwyn, added: "The consultation is an important next stage in our ambition for the community to have safe and easy access to their local schools and shops.

"We’re keen to hear all views on the project and I would encourage everyone to have their say."
