Maybe it’s the sun in the sky, various sporting successes or developments in the political sphere, but there seems to be a renewed optimism in the air.
There’s no doubting that there are big problems we need to tackle, but I feel there is a sense that we can work together to do something about it.
Of course, there will always be those who are more comfortable in tearing down ideas or simply throwing up their hands and exclaiming “what’s the point, nothing changes”.
However, I believe that by working hard, working smarter and working together, we can change things - and I think we can see that in Hatfield.
Whilst the town council does not own, nor control, the town centre or Salisbury Square, we are enthusiastic about their development and promotion.
I would like to thank Councillor Max Holloway, leader of Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, for all the new activities, events and markets being brought to Hatfield Town Centre.
These things always take time to bed in and grow, but I’m sure readers will join me in thanking the new administration at the borough council for paying some much-needed attention on Hatfield.
I am sure readers are as excited as I was to see ground being broken on the Gascoyne Estate led redevelopment of Salisbury Square, close to Hatfield train station.
The development is due to be completed in spring 2026 and will feature flexible commercial, retail and hospitality spaces, as well as residential homes.
It’s so important that we locally support these developments and the businesses that come with them.
That is why at the town council, we will be launching a new Hatfield Business Directory in the autumn, so that its easier for residents and organisations to find local businesses and services.
If we want our town and high streets to survive, we need to keep using them – and as well as supporting physical businesses by identifying their locations and sharing their details, we also want to capture the large numbers of virtual businesses and services that operate in Hatfield as well.
As the town centre evolves, there are going to be a number of changes; however, Hatfield, its residents and its businesses will thrive if we are able to build strong local networks.
And this isn’t just about the money; it’s also about the community being there and supporting each other, being more sustainable and ensuring we have a thriving town for the next generation.
