New data has revealed just how much first-time buyers need to put down to secure a property in Welwyn Hatfield.
The average Welwyn Hatfield starter home cost £362,366 in 2024, meaning young people would need to put down £36,236 for a 10 per cent down payment.
The data, collected from 2012 onwards, showed that the average price of a house for a first-time buyer in the borough was at its lowest in 2013, costing £205,931.
Eleven years ago, a 10 per cent down payment of £20,593 would have been enough to secure a home, but this figure has increased by 75 per cent in 2024.
Rent prices have also soared in Welwyn Hatfield, with the month cost increasing by 30 per cent from £1,025 in 2012, to £1,342 in 2024.
It is much the same story in neighbouring Hertsmere, with an average 2024 price of £395,476, meaning a 10 per cent down payment of £39,547 would be needed.
The price for first-time buyers in the borough was actually at an all-time high in 2023, with the price at £420,454.
Since the lowest price point of £245,479 in 2012, the price has shot by 61 per cent.
Rent prices have also seen a big increased, with monthly rates going from £1,274 to £1,627.
