A man has been jailed for possession of a knife and assaulting a police officer, following an incident in Welwyn Garden City last November.

Michael Forbes, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to two years in prison on Friday, May 10.

The 37-year-old was arrested after officers spotted him acting suspiciously in Elliot Close on Friday, November 17. During his arrest he assaulted a police officer.

Forbes pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing a knife in a public place, assaulting an emergency worker and going equipped for theft.

He was cleared of making use of or attempting to make use of a firearm with intent to resist arrest.

"I hope this sentencing provides reassurance to the local community," said Sergeant Paul Saunders, who investigated.

"We are committed to making sure Welwyn Hatfield is a safe place and we will continue working hard to find criminals and bring them to justice."
