Voters throughout Welwyn Hatfield go to the polls on Thursday, May 2 – almost one year after the borough council fell into “no overall control”.
A Liberal Democrat and Labour joint administration, similar to a coalition, formed after the local elections in 2023.
The two parties have 26 seats between them – more than the 25 out of 48 seats required for a majority.
Of these, the Liberal Democrats have 14 seats and the Labour Group has 12.
In opposition, the Conservatives have 22 seats.
The party previously led the authority between 2002 and 2023.
A third of all council seats – one in each ward – are up for election this year.
Voters throughout Hertfordshire, including in Welwyn Hatfield, will also elect their next police and crime commissioner.
The office holder will be tasked with planning county crime prevention strategies, balancing the police’s budget, and joining up crime prevention partners.
It is one of 37 PCC elections due to take place throughout England and Wales.
