With the stormy weather we have recently been hit with (and in some cases “hit” is the right word with high winds and flying debris to contend with) the temptation to draw the curtains, plonk yourself in front of the TV and enjoy a nice hot chocolate can be too hard to resist.

It is after all national hot chocolate day on Wednesday, January 31!

But humans are social animals and it's important that we avoid hiding ourselves away and going into semi hibernation.

That is why indoor community spaces are so important. Pubs, cafés and restaurants are key for any local community to thrive and we have a variety across Hatfield to choose from.

It is important that we continue to use and treasure these businesses, or we risk losing them.

And don’t worry if money is a bit tight, there are still places to enjoy and meet new people that are kind on our wallets.

The Hive at the Jim MacDonald Centre on High View hosts activities for toddlers, retirees and disabled people; whilst Hatfield Library in the town centre provide sessions specifically dedicated to babies (rhyme time), children (Lego club) and adults (reading groups and mindfulness colouring sessions) and Breaks Manor still operate a youth club on Wednesday evening (6pm-8pm).

St John’s Community Café on Bishops Rise is open every Wednesday, whilst the Sparks Community Café and Hub on Queensway is open Monday-Friday and has a “Pay What You Can” approach. And the list goes on and on.

And if you can’t find something that takes your fancy, then why not hire out one of Hatfield’s community halls (via Birchwood Leisure Centre) and host your own event or club.

Yes its cold and miserable outside, but the weather is just one more topic to talk about when you do go out and catch up with those old, rekindled and/or brand new friends.
