Stephen Sondheim's 'poignant and entertaining' musical comedy Company is heading to the Wyllyotts Theatre in Potters Bar.

The musical - performed by Potters Bar Theatre Company - tells the story of bachelor Bobby, who is celebrating his 35th birthday with a party organised by his friends.

Bobby visits his married friends, who all keep asking why he hasn't married and settled down, and why he can't find the right girl, as he reflects on his relationships with the women in his life and his friends explains the pros and cons of taking on a spouse.

As he searches for answers over the course of a series of drinks, dinners and even a wedding, he discovers why being single, being married and being alive in modern-day New York could drive a person crazy.

Company features Sondheim's award-winning songs, including 'You Could Drive a Person Crazy', 'Barcelona', 'Ladies Who Lunch', 'Side By Side' and 'Being Alive', with a book written by George Furth.

The production stars Mitchell Lathbury as Bobby, and is directed by Lorraine Bottomley, who is passionate about Sondheim musicals. The musical has an interplay of projected images and live action throughout.

While Sondheim's music is challenging for the performer, the songs are intended to lay bare the personal turmoil and joy of each individual character.

Company was first written and performed in 1970 and was revived in the 1990s. The original 1970 production was nominated for a record-setting 14 Tony Awards, and won six.

The show was lauded for being a concept musical told in a series of vignettes rather than a linear plot.

It was most recently revived at the West End in 2018, to much critical acclaim - and contains universal themes which are still relevant today.
