Dash cam footage has captured the moment a Ford Fiesta swerved across three lanes of traffic, before leaving the A1(M).

The incident took place at around 2.44pm on Sunday, June 4, near mile marker 37.6 at Welwyn Garden City.

According to dash cam company Nextbase, the silver hatchback initially hit the central reservation before veering across all lanes, "ramping up the bank" and off the road.

The vehicle rolled onto its roof, with the driver inside.

The driver of the recording vehicle, who wished to remain anonymous, pulled over onto the hard shoulder to provide immediate assistance while a passenger called an ambulance.

After pulling open the driver door with assistance from other passersby, the driver was found unconscious and struggling to breathe with his face pressed onto the roof lining of the upside-down car.

The seatbelt was cut, with witnesses keeping the man’s airway clear before emergency services arrived.

Once the emergency services had arrived, the driver - aged 51 at the time - was taken to hospital with "non-life changing" injuries.

The carriageway was closed while the vehicle was recovered, and reopened at around 5.20pm.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "Police were called at around 2.45pm on Sunday 4 June to report a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a silver Ford Fiesta, between junctions 5 and 6 on A1M travelling southbound.

"A 51-year-old man was taken to hospital by paramedics for non-life changing injuries.

"The carriageway was closed by officers while emergency services attended the scene.

"The vehicle was recovered, and the lanes were reopened at around 5.20pm."

The driver of the recording vehicle added: "It wasn’t until after, all the feelings came out. My wife in the passenger seat was very upset from the moment it all happened until quite some time after.

“I pass the site every day and keep seeing the accident in my mind. It has had an effect on my driving, I always drive slower now.”

Bryn Brooker, head of road safety at Nextbase, commented: “This footage is a vivid reminder of the unexpected events that can occur on our roads and the potential dangers that can arise."
