Hertfordshire Constabulary will be holding a free bike marking event at Hatfield train station this week.

Officers from the Welwyn Hatfield Safer Neighbourhood Team are joining forces with British Transport Police to host a free bike marking event at the station.

The event will take place on Wednesday, July 19 between 3.30pm and 6.30pm.

PC Diana Vickers, who is leading the event, said: “Often when we find a stolen bike, we’re unable to return it to its owner due to no proof of ownership. This is why bike marking is such a good idea as it helps us to identify stolen bikes and return them to their owners.

“The majority of bike thefts happen outside train stations so we’ve specifically chosen to host this event at Hatfield train station to help commuters on their way back from work.

"The event is open to all locals though, so please pop along if you have a bike which is not yet security marked."

Bike marking takes just a few seconds and is highly recommended by police. When a bike is security marked it becomes easier to trace if it is ever lost or stolen.

A sticker is applied to the bike and it becomes registered with Bike Register, the national bicycle database.

PC Vickers added: “If you can’t make the event, please do take the time to read through the bike security tips on our website at herts.police.uk/crimeprevention.”
