The chief executive officer of Historic Royal Palaces is among those from Welwyn Hatfield to receive award in the King's Birthday Honours List.

Welwyn Garden City's John Barnes has been awarded an OBE for services to heritage, having been CEO of the charity since 2017.

Founded in 1989, Historic Royal Palaces manages some of the UK's unoccupied royal palaces, including the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace.

John joined the charity back in 2001, and was director of conservation and learning before taking up his current role.

He previous held senior roles at English Heritage including head of architecture and survey from 1994 to 1995, director of professional services from 1995 to 1998, and director of major projects in 1998 and 2001.

Hatfield's Dr Aruna Mene has received a BEM for services to fabric art, charity and sustainability.

The 73-year-old produces environmentally friendly art, clothing and other objects from non-biodegradable fabric waste, selling each item and putting on exhibitions to raise thousands of pounds for charities including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at University College Hospital in London, and the Nirmalya Trust in Pune, India.

She also worked as a hospital consultant histopathologist before her recent retirement, and in 2019, she was included in the book One Hundred Stories, One Hundred Inspirational Women.
