Plans have been submitted to Welwyn Hatfield Council's planning committee to revamp a popular Hatfield pub, The Red Lion.
McMullen & Sons Ltd submitted the plans through agents Pegasus Group for the development at the 88 Great North Road property.
The application seeks permission for the installation and display of two non-illuminated signs and one externally illuminated sign.

Additionally, a separate application seeks advertisement consent for the installation and display of the following advertisements:
- Non-illuminated, painted "The Red Lion" signs to the front and side elevation
- Externally illuminated, painted "McMullen & Sons Ltd." sign to the front elevation.
The application site comprises The Red Lion building, which currently operates as a Public House at the ground and basement levels with shared living quarters at the upper floors.
Two other applications have been submitted for both planning permission and listed building consent for minor internal alterations - including the installation of a timber-framed and slate-roofed gazebo in the existing outdoor seating area.
The listed building consent is also sought for the following internal alterations to the ground floor of the public house:
- A new opening in a painted brick wall is proposed to provide a new access to the existing toilets.
- A new stud wall to separate the trade area from the new access
- Timber stud wall screen and shelving
- New timber steps and a timber handrail
- Removal of an existing counter
- Fix shut the existing front entrance door and re-assign the porch area to storage, making the existing main entrance at the northern side of the building the sole customer access point in the building
- The removal of the partition wall in the kitchen

Pegasus Group stated that the "proposed internal works are expected to only impact upon the modern fabric and appearance of the Listed Building but will better facilitate the continued operation of the building as a pub".
