A Hatfield resident has expressed anger at the instillation of "unsightly" parking poles on a street in the town, but Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council insist they are necessary.

Fifteen metal poles have been installed in Roe Green Close, with no parking signage to be placed on them ahead to a new parking scheme that begins on June 19.

Residents are not happy with the new street furniture, with one telling the Welwyn Hatfield Times: "Apparently they are for 'no parking on the verge; signage, but this is resolving a problem that does not exist.

"The poles are many and unsightly.

"It would have made much more sense to position signage onto the existing lamp posts and the other street furniture. They are unsightly and not required nonsense."

In a statement, a spokesman for Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council said: "Several permit parking schemes and verge and footway parking restrictions in that area will come into operation from Monday, June 19.

"We have had to use the signage posts because attaching the signs to existing lamp posts or street furniture was not viable.

"We are legally required to let residents know about the new restrictions. Residents in the local area were sent letters advising them of the scheme coming into effect from June 19."
