Accommodation at the University of Hertfordshire was accidentally listed on Airbnb for more than £1,500-per-night after an "error" by an external company.

A number of rooms on the de Havilland Campus in Mosquito Way were listed on the holiday rental site for extortionate prices ranging between £1,500 and £1,600 for just a single night's stay.

The listings were put up by Staykeeper Homes, a tech company which - according to its website - "helps student housing landlords around the world increase revenue with short stay leases".

The company had previously worked alongside the University of Hertfordshire before their contract came to an end in March, with UoH admitting an "error within an external company’s system" had caused the listings to be made public.

The rooms had previously been made available to commuting students for between £30 and £50-per-night.

"We have previously offered short-term bookings of university rooms, at competitive prices of between £30-£50 per night," said a spokeswoman from the University of Hertfordshire.

"This was largely in response to requests from our commuting students who sometimes wish to stay on campus.

"The fee on this Airbnb listing is completely inaccurate and the result of an error within an external company’s system.

"It has now been removed and we have had it confirmed that no-one was charged this price."

Staykeeper Homes have been approached for comment, but the Welwyn Hatfield Times is yet to receive a response.
