Two Welwyn Garden City community groups have merged to form a 'formidable' organisation as they look to protect the town.

Welwyn Garden City Heritage Trust and Keep the G in WGC have joined forces, with a proposed new name to be announced soon after feedback from residents.

The organisations will come together to continue their battle against inappropriate development in Welwyn Garden City and preserve the design principles of Garden City Movement founder, Sir Ebenezer Howard.

"We have been overwhelmed by the breadth of support we have had across the whole town," said Kate Cowan, chair of Keep the G in WGC.

"Merging with the Heritage Trust will ensure a stronger voice for all of us. We’ll announce our proposed new name soon, which we want your feedback on."

Tony Skottowe, chair of WGC Heritage Trust, added: "I’m really chuffed that we are beginning to get towards a single group that will fight to protect and promote our town."

A joint statement from the new group continued: "The organisation will draw on the varied resources and skills that each group has developed.

"It will also be an advocate for the preservation of the town’s original design principles, recognised globally as providing a template for excellent design and enhancing quality of life and to continue documenting the rich history of the town."
