University of Hertfordshire's cheerleading squad will be competing in a higher level of competition for the first time ever.

The UHSirens will be competing at the ICC British Open Cheer and Dance Competitions and University Nationals cheerleading competition in Nottingham.

This is the first year that the team will be competing in the Level 2 category, and they are incredibly excited to show off their new skills after four months of training.

The competition will be held on Saturday, March 25, and Sunday, March 26 at the Motorpoint Arena, bringing together the very best in cheer and dance in the UK.

The teams coach, who works at Twisted Cheer and Dance, saw the teams' skills in early October and deemed them capable of competing at a higher level.

Evie Ward, a second year student and fundraiser committee member, said: "The category in which we decide to compete depends on the abilities within the team.

"The members that have been a part of the team for a few years were really excited about this as it’s an opportunity to perform some harder and more fun stunts.

"The team have been developing and practicing only one routine for four months and will be competing at four competitions (including the Nottingham competition)."

In order to make it to Nottingham, the 18 to 26-year-old cheerleaders have started a fundraiser to cover the cost of transport to the competition.

In turn, they have set themselves a challenge to cover the distance to Nottingham and back in a February challenge.

Each of the five stunt groups in the teams aim to walk, run or cycle 300km each by the end of the month in order to earn the donations.

The transport will cost roughly £500, but any additional funds raised will go towards improving equipment, reducing uniform costs and reducing next year’s competition fees.
