The bomb squad were called to Hatfield in the early hours of this morning following reports of a "suspicious substance".
At around 4am, Herts police announced that thy were at the scene in Howe Dell, and asked people and motorists to avoid the area.
EOD experts were also called to assist, with the substance quickly located and neutralised in a controlled environment.
No one was harmed in the incident, with officers making further enquiries.

"Officers attended the Howe Dell area of Hatfield this morning after police were made aware of a suspicious substance," said a Herts police spokesperson.

"A substance was located, and police were supported by EOD experts at the scene.
"The substance was neutralised in a controlled environment.
"Nobody was harmed and our enquiries continue at this time."
