The Rotary and Satellite Clubs of Welwyn Garden City have built a Santa sleigh from scratch as part of their biggest Christmas campaign yet.

The festive sleigh is set to be unveiled in the town centre on Saturday, November 19.

Over the last four months, the team invested hundreds of hours to build Santa’s sleigh to get it ready and on the road this Christmas - and for many Christmases to come.

The Rotary Club invites everyone to come and see Santa on his fabulous sleigh at the Christmas lights switch-on in Howardsgate on November 19, from noon to 6pm.

The sleigh will also be on display in the town centre on December 10 and 11, and will be on the move around Welwyn Garden City following six exciting routes between December 1 and December 15.

Sue Forrow, president of WGC Rotary Club, said: "Our aim is to bring Christmas spirit and excitement to as many people as possible and to raise money for local charities at the same time.

"The sleigh was a huge undertaking and four of our younger Rotarians worked for literally hundreds of hours.

"One of our members had a spare empty garage and many nights were spent in there, sawing, painting, installing electrics and so on.

"Another Rotarian gave a generator so Santa could stay warm, and the lights would stay bright while another member gave speakers so the music could be heard."

A grand unveiling was held on Sunday evening (November 13) when the build team showed off the sleigh to amazed Rotarians.Welwyn Hatfield Times: Hundreds of hours spent in a Rotary club members garage building the sleigh from scratch.Hundreds of hours spent in a Rotary club members garage building the sleigh from scratch. “It is just wonderful and looks as though it has been built by professionals. Bright red, with a reindeer, coloured lights, parcels, and Rudolph’s lit nose, the sleigh is quite a work of art," Sue added.

The club will be collecting for their chosen charities during Santa's visits around WGC. This year, the President's Charity is Herts Young Homeless, but they will also be collecting for many others including Ukraine, Kids Up, and the Scouting Association.

Along with fundraising in person, the Rotary Clubs have launched a text giving number allowing people to donate £2 by texting WGCSANTA to 70085.
