The founder of a charity that helps the seriously ill has been diagnosed with cancer.

Former Arsenal and Scotland goalkeeper Bob Wilson announced he was suffering from prostate cancer at the weekend.

Bob and his wife Megs started Old Hatfield’s The Willow Foundation after his daughter Anna died in 1999 after a five year cancer battle.

Mr Wilson, 72, said: “I am very confident that the treatment I am receiving will prove successful.”

As a result of his diagnoses the veteran broadcaster has cancelled his work and charity commitments.

The charity’s chief executive, which provides special days for the terminally ill and those with life-shortening illnesses, thanked well wishers for getting in touch.

David White said: “Following on from the Wilson family statement Willow would like to thank everyone for the messages of goodwill sent via the charity – all of which will be passed on.

“Bob and Megs are not only the charity founders and life presidents but also they continue to have a huge involvement in our work.

“At this time all of our efforts will be to ensure that Bob is given the time needed for a successful recovery.

“It is inevitable that he will need to cancel some engagements in the coming months and we will be working closely with Bob, Megs and our supporters to ensure that appropriate cover is organised.”
