Forty people, including children, had to be evacuated from a bus that caught fire at junction 7 (Stevenage) on the northbound carriageway of the A1(M).
Emergency services were alerted at 9.21am this morning (Friday) after reports of smoke coming from the single-decker white bus.
The passengers were assisted in getting to safety and no injuries have been reported.
Crews from Hitchin, Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City attended and used hose jets to extinguish the flames.
The fire, which left the bus stranded between the entry and exit slip roads, caused the road to be closed temporarily.
Police and the Highways Agency used the junction itself to avoid the problem.
Police remain on the scene while they await recovery of the bus.
Normal traffic conditions are expected by 11.30am.
