Work is due to start next week on a major £1million regeneration of Welwyn Garden City’s bus station, and will take 22 weeks to complete causing one road to close.
The work, which aims to improve the bus station for passengers and service operators, is due to start on Monday, October 9.
Workers will be on site between 7.30am until 6pm until March 23.
Osborn Way will be closed between 9.30am and 4pm so drivers are urged to take a different route.
The aim of the project is to create a more “operationally sound” bus interchange, a new bespoke bus shelter, installation of new block paving and kerbing, new pavement construction in the bus station, new street lighting installation, resurfacing of Osborn Way, and new street furniture and landscaping.
The new bus station will segregate pedestrians and buses, in order to improve safety within the location and will ensure the ease of access for all bus users, Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) states on its website.
HCC states: “The existing facility is perceived to have a relatively low ambience, especially outside of the core retail hours and the improvements plan to rectify this.
“A new custom designed shelter will be provided for access to all six bus stops and will contain seating, lighting and bus information screens.”
Tougher glass panels are also being installed along the external facing side of the enclosure to provide greater weather protection than the current shelters and canopy do.
A spokesperson for HCC said: “To be able to undertake our works safely, the existing bus station will be shut for the duration of the works.
“Temporary bus stops will be provided opposite John Lewis and on Bridge Road opposite Waitrose. See the pedestrian diversion route.
“All changes to bus services will be advertised in advance at the existing station and the temporary stops.”
