There are 45 silos on the old factory site, 18 of which will be retained, Welwyn Hatfield Council has confirmed.
One Twitter user wrote to Welwyn Hatfield Council: “How have you let this happen? Such an iconic piece of the town’s history.. gone.
“You should be utterly ashamed. #architecture #demolition #baddecision.”
In response, the council tweeted back: “18 of the original silos at the site will be retained.
“For background, the site was previously owned by Tesco, which sold it to a developer with planning permission attached.
“We received a new planning app yesterday, which will go on our website asap...”

Jen Tucker, who took pictures of the demolition work on Wednesday, January 17, told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “It’s [seeing the factory] been part of my childhood.
“It’s such a shame and it’s a very sad time for our beloved Welwyn Garden City.
“Not to see it everyday is just so sad.

“It’s been a big part of Welwyn Garden City.”
But Welwyn Garden City resident Jenna-Marie Winch said: “I think its about time it was removed.
“It’s an abandoned dangerous site.
“There wasn’t going to be any Shredded Wheat made again in there.

“Memories are memories, which are lovely, but it’s been a waste of useful space and again dangerous.
“I do think the space could be used for something more practical like a leisure park or pool etc.”
