A DRIVER sustained “life threatening” injuries after his car hit a tree, in what was one of more than 200 accidents dealt with by the East of England Ambulance Service this weekend.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, came off the A1000 and collided with a tree between Welham Green and Brookmans park at 8.10am yesterday (Sunday).

Ambulance crews from Potters Bar, WGC and the Essex Air Ambulance attended the scene.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “Paramedics and a doctor from the air ambulance worked rapidly to treat and stabilise him before he was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.”

Following the crash, and a large numbers of others, paramedics are asking the public to take care while driving.

Mr Sanderson added: “In Hertfordshire we received 50 calls to RTCs which required 21 of these incidents to be transported to hospital.

“The majority of the injuries were deemed minor but we are asking people to take note of local conditions when they begin a journey and to travel as safely as possible, for the benefit of themselves and other road users.”
