A NEWLY ordained bishop is set to make WGC his home, as he begins his new role as head of Hertfordshire’s Catholics.

Bishop John Sherrington was ordained at Westminster Cathedral by Archbishop Vincent Nichols, who asked him to live in WGC and look after and care for the parish of Hertfordshire.

Father Norbert Fernandes, parish priest for the three Catholic churches in WGC, Our Lady’s, Holy Family and St Bonaventure, told the WHT: “We have a bishop living in our midst. People will see him about, doing his shopping, and will be able to talk to him.”

The Right Reverend, who will live at St Bonaventure in Parkway, is 53 and was ordained a priest for the Nottingham Diocese in 1987.

After gaining a degree in Mathematics from Cambridge University in 1980 and two years working for Arthur Andersen Management Consultants London, Fr Sherrington was accepted by Bishop McGuinness for the Nottingham Diocese and joined seminary at All Hallows in Dublin.

He later gained an STL in Moral Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome and lectured in moral theology at All Hallows in Dublin and then at St John’s Seminary in Wonersh, Guildford.

For the past two years he was parish priest for the Good Shepherd Parish in Nottingham.

The Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, said: “I’m very grateful to the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, for appointing Fr John Sherrington as Auxiliary Bishop to this Diocese of Westminster.

“Bishop-elect Sherrington is a priest of wide experience, fine abilities and a generous, graceful nature. I welcome him most warmly as will every member of this Diocese.”

? The bishop will lead masses at Our Lady and Holy Family on Sunday, October 9 and at St Bonaventure on Sunday, October 16
